Recently, the 2MW flywheel energy storage system with complete independent intellectual property rights developed by Beijing Honghui International Energy Technology Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Honghui Energy”) has been used in the 100MW photovoltaic power generation project at the Tiepishihu Technology Park in Yujian District, Jiangxi Province, operated by China Huadian Corporation. The system is providing primary frequency regulation for the photovoltaic power station and has entered the intensive commissioning phase, with the full capacity of the energy storage system expected to be connected to the grid by the end of May. This project is a demonstration project of the first batch of energy storage technology projects led by China Huadian Group in 2021, serving as an empirical platform to verify the participation of hybrid energy storage systems in peak shaving and frequency control strategies for new energy power stations. It is well known that renewable energy generation based on wind and solar energy is subject to natural resource conditions, exhibiting fluctuations, intermittency, and randomness. Its regulation and control are challenging, and large-scale grid connection can impact the safe and stable operation of the power grid. Flywheel energy storage is a physical energy storage technology that utilizes a high-speed rotating rotor under vacuum magnetic levitation conditions to store energy. It has advantages such as high instant power, millions of frequent charge-discharge cycles (with a lifespan of up to 20 years), fast response speed, high energy conversion efficiency, wide temperature adaptability, environmental friendliness without pollution, no fire or explosion risks, and precise measurement and control capabilities. When used in new energy stations, it can effectively enhance the primary frequency regulation capability of the power grid.

Primary frequency regulation refers to the automatic control process in which when the frequency of the power grid deviates from the deadband, the control system of the units in the grid automatically adjusts the active power of the units to limit the frequency variation, maintaining the stability of the grid frequency. Flywheel energy storage, with its high power and fast response advantages, is very suitable for supporting primary frequency regulation in coordination with new energy units.
The project uses eight flywheel energy storage products from Honghui Energy, totaling 2MW. The installation includes mechanical components (the flywheel itself) and electrical equipment (FCS, PCS, high-voltage switchgear, etc.). The flywheel energy storage system adopts containerized installation for the electrical equipment, while the mechanical components are installed in pits, achieving the modularization of the entire system based on the characteristics of the constituent equipment, facilitating daily operation management and maintenance.

In 2023, in addition to providing primary frequency regulation services for the China Huadian Jiangxi photovoltaic power station project, Honghui Energy’s flywheel products are also applied in the flywheel energy storage system primary frequency regulation project at the Shenergy Guangdong Agricultural-Photovoltaic Complementary 150MW photovoltaic power station and the flywheel demonstration project at a photovoltaic station in Shandong, receiving consistent recognition in the market. Furthermore, a new contract has been signed for a petroleum drilling flywheel energy storage project aimed at enhancing the power output characteristics of diesel generators, improving operational efficiency, reducing the number of diesel generator operations, and lowering operating costs.
Remaining true to their original intentions, Honghui Energy continues to promote the widespread application of flywheel energy storage technology in fields such as uninterrupted power supply for data centers, semiconductor industry production lines, mobile power vehicles for the power grid, energy saving in rail transit, auxiliary photovoltaic and wind power, traditional thermal power plants, grid primary frequency regulation/AGC, national defense and military industries through their outstanding flywheel energy storage products and services.
